Election materials included printed ballots for older students and photo ballots for younger students. Voters received a sticker.
Central Kansas Christian Academy held a Presidential election on Tuesday. All CKCA students and staff present that day voted.
The final tally was 70 votes for Donald Trump and eight votes for Kamala Harris.
Principal Sherry Pruter said grades K-2 voted using “photo” ballots, while grades 3-8 used traditional ballots mimicking actual paper ballots. They voted on the U.S. president, as well as a couple of fun questions: favorite way to spend time, and favorite CKCA meals.
The favorite way to spend time was watching TV, with reading coming in second. The favorite CKCA meal was nachos, triumphing over pizza.
Each student got a “future voter” sticker.
Pruter said this is the latest in a series of civics lessons.
“Second graders have been studying the electoral process. They also are learning about writing a bill. The class is divided into groups including the committee, who wrote the bill; the house and senate, where it will go next; and once passed, the ‘bill’ will be presented to the principal (as acting president) to be signed or vetoed,” she said.
The third graders just completed a unit entitled “Presidents & Precedents,” where the students are learning about past presidents, the importance of leadership and setting a positive “precedent” in their lives and actions.
“We believe that voting in America is an incredible privilege that should never be taken for granted,” school officials stated in their news release. “We want to teach our students that they should prayerfully consider the issues and candidate important to them, to vote their values and engage others in civil discussions about things that matter.”
